You are right...Lots going on then.
I have been known to spend a week in Chama, but that was when a photo special or some such thing was going on. But now with D&S stuff as you mentioned, and La Veta train, 2 weeks in the entire area would not be too much of a stretch.
Here's an itinerary for would be steam fans.
Arrive Alamosa on a Friday. Ride the Train to La Veta on Saturday.
Day 2-Chase the train to La Veta, or what you can on Sunday.
Day 3, Drive to Antonito and Ride the C&TS to Osier and back, then drive to Chama to overnight.
Day 4 Chase the Train to Cumbres, then wait for
it to come back or head to the high country for a walk-in shot someplace. Overnight Chama.
Day 4 option....If you prefer to shoot the Antonito train stay overnight in Alamosa, then on day 4 shoot something between Antonito and Osier.
Maybe only 2 walk-in shots for the day. Overnight
in Chama.
Day 5, shoot the train to Cumbres, and then take an afternoon drive to Durango.
Day 6, Ride the Train in some fashion.
Day 7, Shoot the train in some fashion(photo not with a gun-just to clarify).
Day 8, if there at the time of Railfest,do a couple of the special train rides, like the photo special.
Day 9, An extra day to shoot one of the specials or more, or just get those hike in shots somewhere remote.
Day 10, Sleep in and drive to Alamosa.
Day 11, hit there in time for another weekend steam run, and photograph some spots missed the first time.
Day 12, decide if another day on the C&TS or La Veta train is worthwhile.
Adendom....Wonder what Earl is charging for photo specials with 1744??? Looks like she could have a really nice bark up those steep grades. Smoke is nice but sound is what I like in my videos!!!
Steamingly,
Greg
