Every person that has helped put together such a comprehensive fire-fighting effort with the D&S and local entities in La Plata County should be commended. Al Harper and his entire staff and crew are making it possible for steam to continue operating in the strict world of the 21st century. Between the efforts to reduce coal smoke emissions and their firefighting planning and prevention, the D&S has put itself in a position to thrive in unfavorable conditions.
In my humble opinion, the smoke issue really shouldn't be such a problem, but is necessary to address due to modern politics.
