Skip,
You were very lucky to be out in such a beautiful area. When I was there, I found some 30" gauge rails off the main Highway (along the East side of the Island) still encased in the concrete crossings on the side roads (but that was almost 20 years ago).
I also found some 3' gauge rails in road crossings around Sprecklesville on the north side of Maui. This was not the LK&P near Lahina.
Of course, there is the 3' gauge on the west side of Oahu, the former Oahu Railway, going up to the Military Depot there. Unused at the time, I understand that they are now part of the Ewa Railway.
Hawaii has a fascinating Railroad history, with everything from Standard Gauge on the Big Island to the 30' gauge on Kauai. I can't remember if any of the islands had any 2' gauge or not.
I just got back from the Dominican Republic where the railroad's job has been usurped by trucks and the highways are full of containers that would have been better shipped by rail. Unfortunately, the Railroad to Puerto Plata was abandoned, seemingly just when it was needed most.
Some of the Islands of the world, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic (on Hispaniola), Hawaii, etc. have a fascinating railroad history. There are few books, but a bit of research reveals a lot of History if you have the time. Many were narrow gauge, 30", 3', Meter, 42". What a gold mine for aspiring authors!
Good on you Skip, a few photos are important so that others don't forget.
