The ash pit was built so that fires can be cleaned in Silverton over the layover. Before we had the ash pit there, we would drop the ashes on the ties. We are trying to limit the times the fires have to be cleaned in Durango to just in the morning. This should help cut back on some of the smoke problem in town. Currently there are no plans to have a trip originate in Silverton.
