Yes there are several Garden layouts near the Durango area. Ours was one of the layouts included in the local layout tours during the narrow gauge convention last summer. The main club in the area is the San Juan Large Scalers.
Most of the buildings are Pola and Piko kits, while some were custom built by various vendors such as J.S. Woodcraft. The steel bridges were custom made by Eagle Wing Iron Craft.
Everything except the track comes in during the winter. The snow, usually, is just too heavy and would crush the buildings and rolling stock.
However, if there is a light snow on the ground we will occasionally bring trains out and have some winter fun. The rotary doesn't plow all that great since our snow is usually very icy. But when it is fresh and powdery the rotary works great...and looks even better. But pilot plows on the locos still work the best.
The layout can run on electric power through the rails or battery equipped locomotives. Track cleaning is a pain, especially with tree sap, so we are going more and more to all battery power.
The electric control is a large transformer (15 Amps) and two smaller ones for the yard/turntable, and the mine train. The switches are all manual so there isn't really a need for a large control board like you'll see for HO. And with the move to mostly battery power the transformers are being used less and less.
