Did part of two days there in the spring of 1995 with Les Jarrett. We put a segment in our "America By Rail-The West Coast"(2nd ABR).
Max was still there, and gave us the royal treatment. Les did a cab ride in Shay 15, and we rode the rail cars. When Les rode the cab, we used a rail car with a trailer, and I mounted my camera and tripod on the trailer, while using a milk case for a seat. We then ran ahead of the 15 and got some nice action shots which we used. This of course is not far from Yosemite National Park. Train goes downgrade and makes a loop at the end then goes back the same tracks upgrade.
Worth the stop and ride! We used a Pat Barry shot of 15 on our video cover as well!! That was another monstrosity trip....wow 12 years ago!!

PS. Other side trips on that program are the Spirit of Oregon Dinner train(now defunct), Mt. Hood Railroad(recommended), and the California Western(no steam running). We also drove through Oklahoma City a day or two before the bombing there of the federal building.
