Always being vocal for pay raises can be self defeating and strikes against you. Best railroaders are the quiet ones. The good boss knows their employee life style and needs as well as their qualtifications and make raises as they can. I went 31 years and never said a word about a raise and ended up far richer than need be. But I didn't get out of management although I always dreamed on being in your seat. In 1970 I did get the fireman's job on 483 for some trips on that line.
