Thanks to Steven Haworth for posting the following link to Colorado’s Historic Newspaper Collection from 1859-1923 that is available on-line. IMHO this is a gold mine of information for historic researchers and others interested in local history.
Typical of what you can find here is a story from the Thursday August 1, 1912 Telluride Journal:
RIO GRANDE PAY CAR IS THING OF PAST
From Wednesday’s Daily
The Denver & Rio Grande has run its last pay car over the lines, and that time honored method of distributing the salaries and wages to its thousands of employes (sic) has been abolished forever.
Following an order from President B.F. Bush, and which extends over all the Gould lines, the pay cars will be regulated (sic) to the back shops to be made over into other equipment and the pay checks will be expressed direct to station agents who will distribute them among the men. The car which reached here on July 21 from Denver was the last to be used and the next payment will be on August 10.
By inaugurating the new system the men will be paid earlier in the month, getting their checks from 7 to 10 days after the first as a rule. It also adds to the importance and responsibilities of the local agents of the company who dole out the checks to the employes (sic) in their jurisdiction.
It is stated unofficially that J. O’Connor, who for the past 30 years has been paymaster on the Rio Grande, has accepted a position of responsibility in the office of J.W. Gilluly, treasurer of the line, while T. Summer, who has been in charge of the Utah lines car, will accept a similar position in the Salt Lake City office.
