The next time you are in Jay's shop, ask him to show you the G Scale Bachmann coach I repainted with Krylon maroon side, black roof and letter boards, and gold C&TS lettering. At the risk of patting myself on the back, I think it looks sharp.
But back on the subject of what was prototypical, I seem to remember a reference to the early D&RG color being maroon. Perhaps someone can verify this.
