Narrow Gauge Line to Santa Fe Closed by Drifting Snow
Heavy winds sweeping old snow into cuts on the Santa Fe branch caused the Rio Grande passenger train number 426 to be turned back to Santa Fe at Taos Junction, New Mexico Tuesday. The announcement was made by the Alamosa dispatcher’s office which said that train number 425 en route from Antonito to Santa Fe had gotten through safely.
If the winds subside the rotary will be operated out of Alamosa Wednesday to open up the line before the trains are run. According to railroad employees on the Santa Fe branch line, there was no new snow, but the wind was moving old snow at such a rate that it was barely possible for train number 425 to plow through the cuts and it was deemed impossible for train number 426 to make the trip.
While the wind was blowing on Cumbres Pass, no difficulty in that vicinity was expected, Chief Dispatcher W.S. Graham said today.
