Rotary Clears Line After Heavy Drifting
Trains on the Durango and Santa Fe branches of the Rio Grande railroad were expected to be operating Wednesday following the clearing of the lines by the narrow gauge rotary.
Trains operated Tuesday over Cumbres Pass, but snow was drifting in the territory between Antonito and Big Horn to such an extent that the railroad officials deemed it wise to clear out the line before operating trains over the line Wednesday.
The rotary left Alamosa at 4am Wednesday and after clearing the track to Big Horn, it turned and came back to Antonito, arriving about 10am. The rotary was then operated down the Santa Fe branch.
Tuesday’s mixed train number 426 en route from Santa Fe to Antonito was not able to complete the trip because of snow drifts on the tracks. Mixed train number 425 en route from Antonito to Santa Fe got through before the road was closed. Tuesday’s train number 426 was to operate to Antonito Wednesday, return promptly to Santa Fe as train number 425.
