It was not unusual for engines to be changed at Chama, with the engine off 115 returning to Alamosa on 116. Also, normal pactice at this time was for the engine crew off 115 to return to Alamosa on the same day and then have the following day off. In this case, the engineer was Coughlin on both trains.
