The first time I heard about the Texas to Ohio ng. route was when I was working for SP in Texas and part of my territory was the HE&WT (the "Rabbit") which was the original southern end of that route. Years later when I got a copy of Hilton's book one of the first things I did was look to see if that routing really existed....and bingo it did.
Later while researching a Winterail presentation of my DRGW ng. slides, I found that for a brief period (I believe it was no more than a few months) there was a ng. through route from Santa Fe to Garrision, Montana via the Utah Northern) I think that was the longest through ng. route in the west, but can't recall the mileage or how it compared to Ohio-Texas.
