Excellent point, John. Robert W. Richardson's legacy has many facets, but that may be the most important of them. Many forces in our society alienate and disempower us, and it takes more than a little personal courage and resourcefulness to act forcefully for the greater good. Bob lead the way, as prior to him and his use of media (Iron Horse News), steam locomotive preservation was the mainly the purview of railroad companies and the few municipalities and institutions that would display them. Bob was not the first railfan to save locomotives (In the 1930s the RL&HS, lead by Graham Hardy and others saved many historic n.g. pieces from the Far West that formed the core collection for California State R.R. Museum, and Ellis Atwood in Massachusetts saved the remaining Maine 2 foot gauge engines and rolling stock), but he made the railfan community aware that historic pieces and the railroads that they ran on could be saved by determined individuals and groups. He motivated Dr.Schoolen in Boulder to buy and preserve DB&W/C&S/RGS 74 and Cornelius Haouk to buy 318. Later he gave great support to the still-remarkable purchase by the two states of the C&TS. Personally I felt I could not do much because, like many Americans, I felt those kind of decisions were made above my pay grade. Then I saw an opportunity to save a historic piece of rolling stock, and I made it happen(Ex-D&RGW water car 0470). Now it sits in my yard, but it will be restored someday. Also, when the 315 project floundered because a lack of money, I raised $70,000 on my own, and that really got the project rolling. What Bob showed all of us is yes, you can do it, too!
