Van Briggle roundhouse facility

February 21, 2007 01:13PM
My wife requests a visit to Van Briggle every time we drive to the Springs. She shops for ceramics while I check out the old railroad pictures on the walls. I sure do hope that the ex-MT roundhouse has some sort of historical designation, because I'd really hate to see it razed for a strip mall.
Just so that this has some NG content, my gal's getting pretty good at spotting roundhouses. We were in Lead, SD last summer, and I was driving right by the old NG roundhouse there, mostly hidden behind a car wash and an ATM kiosk. She: Honey, isn't that a roundhouse?" He: Hey, you're right! (while feeling significantly smaller in stature). Ex Black Hills & Fort Pierre, I think. I hope that one gets preserved as well. Looking at the terrain in the vicinity, it's a miracle that it was flat enought to run trains there. Gotta love that narrow gauge...
