Another option may be the use of a backhoe. The company that does the majority of our track work uses a backhoe with a cribbing bucket. The cribbing bucket is a long and barely wider than the hoe. The operator can remove, insert and lift the tie for spiking and with two men on the ground and a hydraulic spike hammer replace a tie in under 10 minutes.
