Also remember that in Europe - besides TGV and high speed trains - there are thousands of miles of narrow gauge and many of these feature dual gauge 3 rail track:
Switzerland (which I know best - I'm living there):
1) Matthorn-Gotthardt-Bahnen (see [www.mgbahn.ch]): 1 meter gauge, several hundert miles, including about 20 miles of dual gauge track shared with the regular Swiss Federal Railroads, route of the "Glacier Express"
2) Montreux-Oberland-Bahn (MOB, see [www.mob.ch]): 1 meter, an estimated 100 miles (including connecting railroads like the GFM which interchange rolling stock with the MOcool smiley
3) The 1 meter gauge "BrĂ¼nig Pass Railroad", a division of the Swiss Federal Railroads. Extensive 3 rail track in the passenger station of Lucerne
...and many more...
France:
There are still a few narrow gauge lines (all 1 meter gauge) around, mainly
1) "Chemin de Fer de Provence": Nice-Digne (a beuatiful line), an estimated 60 miles
2) Chemin de Fer Corse on the Island of Corsica, more than 100 miles
Italy:
Several narrow gauge lines, mostly 950mm (36" =914mm) in the South, espcially
1) The "CircumAEtnea" around the fanous vulcano...
2) On the Island of Sardegna
3) In the very southern part ("Apulia"), where there is also extensive 3 rail track shared with standard gauge
Greece:
The "Pelopponese Railroad" which circles the Pelopponese Semiisland is all 1 meter gauge (and has a wonderful fleet of (A1A)(A1A) high hood Alco diesels. There was an extensive 3 rail trackwok in Athens, now the Endpoint has moved to Corinth, since the new standard gauge line Athens-Corinth has been opened.
Spain:
The FEVE operates a large network of narrow gauge railroads in the north of spain (see [www.feve.es], in spanish)
