this is due to discrepinces in the timing usualy due to wear or a bungled job of alinging the steam ports resulting in the engin running "lame" whitch is when you get the pronounced beat every revolution, whitch usualy means that the power is not as evenly distrubuted over the revolution and causes the engin to lurch occasionaly resulting in broken couplers and draft gear and always resulting in sliperyness.
