In Dick Dorman's Gunnison book there is a photo of #228 with a wagontop boiler . The story is
that several engines were rebuilt with wagontops for service on the very steep Hecla branch a few miles north of Salida .Wagontops were good on steep grades as the design raised the throttle high enough that it would not work water while ascending or descending steep grades .
