Very short memories at work here--this thread was beaten to death within the past 2 years so should be in the archives as to who has responsibility for the 278 and cars, the Ridgway museum's offer to take on the engine, the City of Montrose's notification to the Park Service, etc.
In discussing the 278 with Bill Jones recently, he told me that when he worked on the engine that the earth fill approach to the bridge was still intact and that they just walked to the bridge to work on the engine, and thus the supposition would be that the display was rolled in place on temporary rails laid onto what is now the roadway. Bill said that the approach was washed out during a storm, was never replaced, and the gap has served as a pretty good deterrant to keep people away from the engine. The marker lamps on the 278 are fake, so that would be a big disappointment to someone.
