Dick, Shay locomotives were offered by Lima with two gear ratios. WSL #14 is a class 60-3 shay. Standard gear ratio for the 60-3 shay was 1:2.53 or 17 teeth on the main gear and 43 teeth on the wheel. This gave the engine a tractive effort of 25,830# according to the Lima catalog. WSL #14 was delivered with the alternate gear ratio of 1:2.21 or 19 tooth main gear and 42 tooth wheels. This made for a faster engine but less power. Again, according to the Lima catalog, with this gearing the tractive effort would have been 22,570#. Depending on Lima's experience and the conditions encountered, the alternate gear ratio, either gave more speed, or more power. This varied by class of shay, but in most cases the heavier the engine, the alternate gear was for power, and the lighter the engine, the alternate was for speed, with the change over occurring above class 32-2. The exceptions to this were the class 60-3 and 80-2 where the alternate was for speed, not power. This information comes from Lima catalog # s-4.
