One more image from the Bates & Austin Reunion Book. I hope this isn't too boring. But this town was built for OLC and SVRy employees. I suspect this photo was taken after the rails were pulled up however.
Present day highway 7 is in the upper left center with Newtville (spelling?) to left of the highway. At the top of the S curve in Hwy7 on the upper side is the town water supply, which is still there, but not visible in this photo. I don't know that it is in use however. The SVRy ROW would have been along the bottom edge of Bates in this photo, and appears to be a road when this photo was taken. Oregon Lumber Co. is off the photo to the right.
For those that have never been to here, there is absolutely nothing left of Bates or Newtville. I believe all the Bates homes were basically given to the occupants with the understanding they had to be removed from Bates. And they were moved to Prairie City or dismantled after the mill shut down.
