The rails and ties are, indeed, gone. The last of them were pulled last of Aug, 1st of Sept.
I regulaly haul into the valley, and was hard to see them being pulled up. The ties were stacked at Thunder River Jct. while the rails were moved to Newcastle, to be loaded into rail gons, and I assume, moved to Salt Lake. About half of the rails have been shipped.
Over the last five or six years, there were several tax and bond issues put before the voters , and were soundly defeated. I would say the defeat of these tax issues did more than anything else to cause the rails to be pulled.
Meanwhile CDOT continues to pour money into Hwy 82 to accommidate the traffic to Aspen.
