I think a lot of the photographers of that era were shooting Cerro and Black Canon as the rumors were the D&RGW was going to abandon the line. They had a lot of problems with shifting soil on Cerro.
Dick Kindig, Jack Thode, and John Maxwell were in Gunnison one day. The D&RGW gave them a choice of riding a two engine freight to Crested Butte or a fregiht through the Black Canon. They chose that one. I would have preferred Crested Butte, but they thought Crested Butte would last forever, so they chose the canon trip.
