This engine was pulled out of the woods by Dick and Jim Holmes along with the help of several friends. They are the ones who restored the engine to operationg condition in Los Gatos and subsequently sold it to Hal. I've seen their 16MM movies of all this and it was a feat. Jim Holmes was in Colorado this summer and I had lunch with him in Silverton. He has some great stories and should be tapped for them before it's too late. Jim worked for the SP as a signal maintainer, and his brother Dick worked for the Kodak labs in Palo Alto. Jim lives in San Jose.
