Re: Shaking the Grates

Charlie, with the 480s and 497, getting over the entire railroad without shaking the grates was generally not a problem. The 463,which never fired real well, demanded a clean fire and sometimes the the fire was cleaned at Osier, westbound. Cleaning a fire on the road meant wetting down the ties real well so they would not burn, and a little raking of the ash so it would not sit in a high enough pile to derail the engine. Dumping the ash pan enroute was discouraged because of the fire hazard.
