Beebe was a world class "bon vivant", and his beat was the island of Manhattan. I remember a great tale he told in American Heritage of a speak-easy with the above name. He was extraordinarily well connected with the upper echelons of business and society, and when he wasn't writing about trains it was about partying with the elites.
