For those who like chasing down rumours of lost equipment I just found in my notes a wreck report from the Railroad Gazette, August 25, 1882: Oregon Railway & Navigation reported a wreck near Dalles, in which a flat car loaded with a steam fire engine on board went off the track and into the Columbia River into 60 feet deep water.
