The 0540 is a perfect example of what the D&RG did to equipment, though I may be confusing it with the 0505. I know I've seen a picture of one or the other with a locomotive halfway through the hack, and much of what was left up in the air. There is little chance there was much left to salvage but the hardware. Also, I believe either or both of the D&S cabeese were originally short, and then made into a long caboose. Essentially a new caboose except in the eye of Uncle Sam.
