If they want to control Steam in Durango, then they should compare apples to apples. Maybe they should go up to Moffat Tunnel, and watch all the diesel fumes that are pumped out by the big exhaust fans, or check other diesels for polutants. Its not just steam that polutes, and to be honest I would rather breath some steam exhuast than diesel exhaust any day.
I think the problem here is that they can't SEE the diesel exhaust as readily, but its there, and what you see there is usually worse than what comes out of a steam stack, since much of it is just that STEAM! Granted any MACHINE will make some pollution, but they should also measure diesels to see how much BAD pollution there is going that route by comparison.
Maybe we should have a team of 100 horses pull the train. It would make fertilizer for FREE for the community to harvest every day too!!!
Picture if you can, the fresh road apples, sticking to the wheels of the coaches, and the fragrence overpowering the neighborhood as the train passes through downtown Durango! Ummm lovely, eh!!! Next we would hear how this is a health hazzard creating potential diseases! Its a good thing I don't operate the D&S, cause I sure as heck would not take this stuff from these clowns. My patience would have worn thin a long time ago. See what happens to the community of Silverton and some other Durango businesses when the tran doesn't run a few days or a couple of weeks in a row. I bet the motel operators would see a real slowdown!!! Durango has to have one of the highest priced Super 8 motels in the US. At least it was the most I paid for one in 1994. You think I was there to enjoy the new housing construction in Durango!!!???
As Fritz once said, they could move the engine facilities to Silverton. Heck make the base there, and run to Cascade and back, and forget Durango. Maybe make it to Durango once a week. Motels would love that wouldn't they!!!
Put a wye in at Hermosa, and run from Silverton to Hermosa and back. I better quit before I get too carried away!
