I am sort of new to this list and didnt know till just now that the #20 was going to be restored to operating condition. Thats pretty cool. Now we need to get the rights to operate it on the line being rebuilt out of Dolores (if this is still happening as of july 05).
Any way...I dont know where I read this, or maybe was told about it, but it was some interesting info to hear. I think I may be refering to a listing earlier....
Towards the end of the RGS, #20 was in such bad condition they had to "hide" it from the inspectors. The center axle and bearing box etc was so badly worn that the center wheels wouldnt stay on the track. The RGS didnt have the funds to rebuild her since they had just rebuilt I belive both the 41 & 42. And the wreck of 455 couldnt have been too cheap of a fix. So when the inspector was in ridgeway, 20 was near Durango, and when he was in Durango, 20 went to Ridgeway.
This could be a total dream in my part..I seem to do that sometimes, so if my knowledge is inaccurate someone may fill me in. Also I saw that the donation was made anonymously. Would like to thank whoever did this. Will it seriously take 400,000 to restore this loco, or will some of it be going to other aspects?
