Land north of the Pueblo Union Depot is owned by some members of the foundation. Here are several industry tracks used by the Denver & Rio Grande. These tracks are laid with 85-pound rail rolled in 1902.
The diamond that the Rio Grande used to cross the Santa Fe into its freight depot has been taken out so a 400-foot connecting track from what remains of the Pueblo Union Depot loop will allow us to get our equipment over to the industry tracks, some of which will be relaid with the RMSM rail. Our trains, which we run about every other month, will operate out of the former freight depot, now the Southeastern Colorado Heritage Center museum.
Also we want to negotiate with BNSF to acquire part of its track that dead ends at Elizabeth St. This used to be part of the wye that brought Santa Fe and Colorado & Southern trains into Pueblo Union Depot prior to 1951. The BNSF still uses part of this track but it is red flagged about a quarter mile from the end. We want to acquire the track beyond the red flag and rebuild it.
There will be grading involved. Currently we have some ties that we obtained from the BNSF when they put concrete ties on the main line in front of the depot. We will need more as well as track jewelry and switches.
This must be completed within two years as the attorneys who own Pueblo Union Depot have said our lease will not be renewed.
