1744 was bought from Heber by the Fort Worth and & Western Tarantula train. It was test fired in Ft Worth, and torn down at the same time the FWWR began rebuilding 2248 (which came from the Texas State) in 1991. FWWR quickly found out how expensive all this was and decided to stop work on 1744 and concentrate on 2248 because it was "cuter" of the two. It sat until around late 1999 when it was sold the the outfit in New Orleans. It was rebuilt (repaired is a better term) in Ft Worth, operated briefly there then sent to "Norlins". The New Orleans & Gilf Coast's passenger operation lasted less than 6 months before the plug got pulled. Word has it patronage was poor, scenery was non-existant - a levee on one side and refineries with typical "urban wildlife" on the other. NO&GC has been trying to sell 1744 for what that have invested in it for quite some time.
