I still have the RGHS news letter that the story was in. It was titled "Back Filling with Locomotives" and is quite the tale. The story goes that they were going to fill it with 5 124' long L-131s. After further research they only needed to cover 197 feet to avoid damage to the federal land above. The railroad owned 120 feet of land from each portal which could be back filled/blasted. So the new calculation was one C-48 and one L-131. The tale specifies 1136 and 3600 as the lucky subjects.
In a sidebar it goes on with a story about the successor the SP. Floods and mud slides buried the facilities and equipment in the Roseville yards near Sacramento. Rather than dig everything out they just built new on top. If you knew the right manhole cover you could still gain access to the buried engine shop with intact engines. What a story!
