The 8 is defintely repairable. It never operated while I was at the Loop from 1987 through 2004. It is in need of a thorough overhaul, but, we generally felt it was a little big and the 12 and 14 made better engines for the Loop.
I have never heard the story about a blown cylinder head. As best I recall, their all in place just the way they should be.
