I haven't really noticed any "too dark" photos either. One question, are you using a Mac? I have noticed that Macs tend to display photos quite differently than do PCs (although I can't remember if they were darker or lighter).
Regardless, as John suggests, you can probably diddle about with the monitor and with your graphics settings to get things to look right.
