To answer your questions, it took about an hour to travel from Alamosa to Antonito leaving at 8:25 AM. Some slow orders were in effect because of track work and for the "scenic" Conejos River Bridge. Adult fare was $12.00, I recall.
The train operated as a pure passenger train: one diesel (Canadian American RR F40M) and three passenger cars. Freight moves in separate trains to the perlite plant at Antonito, not in a mixed train. One freight I saw had 7 open hoppers, 3 tank cars, and 4 covered hoppers.
There was a scheduled evening run to Antonito leaving at 4:25 PM. The day we returned from Osier, it did not show up at Antonito until 8 PM!
One report on another discussion list says the Antonito train has been annulled either because of low ridership or because the FRA is investigating various "incidents" of late. Hmmm...
