In the early 1970s, you could ride a caboose on the Great Western railroad for $1 a day. If more than a few showed up, they would put on a second or third caboose. They let kids ride in the cupola and this was on a real freight that was hauling sugar beets. They even let me and my son ride in the cab of an SW1200 from Windsor to Office Junction, Colorado....all for $1.00. Then their insurance company got involved.
