The Phoenix is an ex-White Pass fuel tank car outfitted with a pump, fire hose and adjustable nozzles, one upper and one lower nozzle per side.
Entirely home made (except for the tank, frame and trucks) by Larry Tuttle and Jerry Helinga, two long time members of SVRy. Jerry and Larry have an interesting story about getting residual bunker-c removed from the tank. Some of which was consumed by # 19.
I don't have a cost summary of this project, Jerry Huck may have an estimate on that. But it certainly wasn't $1M!
It is the Rear Brakeman's duty to start the pump enroute. Stationed in the caboose the Rear Brakeman simply reaches over the rail of the caboose platform and starts the pump (electrically started). The nozzles are preset. We currently spray every trip during fire season on the North side of the track from Hwy 7 to Sumpter, a distance of about 2.5 miles.
