ALAMOSA — The San Luis Express left the old Alamosa Depot at about 9 Friday morning. It would be the first trip for four coach cars to be pulled over La Veta Pass before the excursion line opens for its regular season on May 24.
This time, however, no one rode within the coaches that were originally built by Pullman for the Long Island Railroad in the 1950’s. Instead, passengers rode in a 1948 refurbished sleeper car, on loan to the railroad, that was connected to the end of the Pullman coach cars.
Friday’s passengers were guests of Ed Ellis, president of Permian Basin Railways (PBR), the company that owns the San Luis Rio Grande Railroad.
“We’re taking our freight customers for a ride,” Ellis said. “We have a lot of valuable customers here.”
