Fake Fake Stacks

April 15, 2006 05:09PM
Neither of these fake stacks is an original fake stack from the 60's.
Remember, these were large enough to completely cover the original cast stacks. The beef that a lot of folks had was that the fake stacks would cause the shotgun stacks and the smokebokes to rust out.
They were certainly distinctive, and they were very much a part of the "image" of the train for over 20 years. They were also very effective cinder catchers.
I'm pretty sure I saw these two fake fakes in the Durango yard several years ago. One of them may have been modified from 476's original fake, which was damaged by a drag line at Rockwood in the 70's. To the amazement of everyone, an almost identical replacement was shipped from Burnham within a month.
