Hello all!
Thank you all for the kind words and remembrances. Boy, it has been a long time since I posted here or anywhere for that matter. How I sorely miss my fellow Loopers and so wish we could somehow be together again… those two years yielded memories to last a lifetime!
Indeed Shay No. 12 was, and is, my favorite locomotive. I would however really like to take the 40 up the hill just one more time. It’s odd to be wishing for the old days... I’m not old enough for that!
So…I really don’t know what to say about the Trains article other than it’s an honor to have been included. There are many, many others whose toil goes unrecognized; each and every one of them should garner similar acclaim. Not that I question Erik and Jim’s judgment for over the past year they have worked countless hours on the Young Guns piece and I believe it shows. In my opinion, for Erik it was a labor of love and in spite of not having hands-on involvement he continues to do his part to ensure steam lives on. I am also delighted Jim chose to publish a photo which is pleasing to me; it is an image I will treasure always.
Other than that, things here at the Nevada Northern are perking along. As the article said, I am now Buildings and Grounds Manager which means I’m responsible for 80-some buildings and structures spread over 140-some miles of Nevada’s Great Basin. I’m in train service and a bit of engine service; learning to run the oil-burners (disease-els) as well as throwing some coal now and then, despite my mother admonishments to not throw rocks.

Should any of you ever get a chance to visit the Nevada Northern Railway Museum, please do so and be sure to stop by and say hello. Most of the railroad’s buildings and equipment are concentrated here in East Ely; one of the towns Kennecott built to support their mining operations. Although once a separate town from Ely proper, the two have been one since the 1970s. Nonetheless, the East Ely yard and shop complex is the most amazing and special place, I assure you the experience of visiting here will not be one you’ll soon forget.
All for now… thanks for bringing back great memories!
