The summer of 1981 saw a lot of changes for the Silverton branch. Charlie Bradshaw took over from the Rio Grande and one of his first steps was to remove the fake diamond stacks from the K-28’s. The postings about Natasha and the other ”young guns” reminded me of Charlie’s experiment that summer with some really young guns. Seems though some of the other changes to the K-28’s re: installing booster seats and extended Johnson bars to accommodate some of the potential new crews (aka shortees) didn’t go over too well with the old Rio Grande heads…. The final straw was the requirement that the crews do diaper duty for the “younguns”. I always hated that too, where was their mother when you needed her…so here we see one of the potential “D&S young guns” studying the geology of the San Juans after having a short nap and his formula prior to high balling back to Durango…
