Was it the original or a Curta II. Both are highly collectable today, I sold a couple original models for over $700 each 5 years ago. Now, completed auctions on eBay are more like $1100.
They were incredible machines, invented by a Jew that was in a concentration camp. He got better treatment, as the Germans really wanted him to finish it. He stalled, and was released at war's end, moving to Switzerland, where he completed and marketed them. Supposedly, they were one of the most complex precision instruments ever mass produced. Many surveyors swore by them. The ones I had were USFS surplus.
The Curta II was produced until about 1971. They look like a pepper mill, complete with crank on top, and about the same size.
