Fascinating stories, Mr. Butler. My father was born just 5 days after you, in the same hospital! He grew up in Alamosa, but the family moved to Cortez in the mid-40s, and he eventually settled in Aztec. We would pass through La Plata all the time on our way between Aztec and Cortez, so I'm familiar with the area.
I definitely was not familiar with the way of life you recount! I do have lots of memories of my Dad telling us how it was "way back when," but he was never one to write it all down. I very much appreciate the time you've taken to write down your memories and especially want to say thanks for being willing to share them. It was a long time ago, but on the other hand it wasn't all that long ago. It's amazing how much the world has changed since then. Stories like yours really give us a way to see how things have changed for both better and worse. Funny how the important things don't change much, though.
Thanks again.
