There is a picture in Dorman's "Durango" book on page 30 that he says is 1948 with chimneys, and a misdated photo on page 34 showing the chimneys removed in 1946. In the second photo, the depot is painted white, but there is a "San Juan" consist in front. Since the "San Juan' quit running is January 1951, I'd say probably 1950 would be the year they were removed.
There may also have been an earlier time they had been removed and replaced. I've sctratched my head a few times over this question.
Misdated captions in books and calendars are not uncommon, as we all know. I'm just going off the top of my head when I say this, but I think there is evidence they had been removed and replaced at least once prior to the 1940's.
