D&RGW #498 was moved onto the transfer table and then into the shop on June 18, 1962. That was my first day of two weeks following the narrow gauge operation and I had no trouble walking all around the Alamosa shops and even into the RH & main shops. I never received one word hindering movement, and must have been told of a Chama to Cumbres turn then happening as later mid-day I saw the smoke of the EB as I went by Windy Point. Waited and watched the Coxo passage and assault to the summit. I was driving our family’s 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe, a Wooden Station Wagon, which is now fully restored ready to do it again on Cumbres.
Thanks Earl for that history as they were the first ng on line engines I saw in June 1960 as the family made a full West Coast loop vacation. After a Silverton ride, WSL was the next NG stop but that happened on the July 4th holiday so all the engines were lined up on ready track.
