Earl:
I have been staying away from this list, but I could not reply to you via email.
The D&RGW would always run what they called a "stub" between Durango and Chama when the pass was closed. The mail would be brought up from the south to Farmington and brought to Durango on the mixed. The stub would meet the Pagosa Springs mixed and the mail and express distriubed along the line. As there was almost no one living along the line from Chama to Antonito, they got mail to almost everyone. The line from Alamosa to Antonito would be covered by the Chili Train unless the Chili Line was shut down, in which case the D&RGW would run a stub from Alamosa to Antonito. A few times, a stub was run out of Santa Fe to Taos Junction and return as the snow blockages would happen on the north end of that line. As only a few D&RGW train registers have survived, I have to rely on other resources for my research and that is why it is taking so long.
