John,
The VFCO is one of best steam museums in South America. The line operates about 12 KM to Tridentes (my spelling may off, I don´t have my Trains Unlimited Tour guide from 2002 available here). They operate 4-4-0´s and 2-8-0´s. I think they have some other wheel arrangements. This is only a small part of the former system. By the way it is a 30 in. gauge line. One of the mainline operators has the concession to operate the line. So as a result it is kept up to better than average standards. I think it is FCA Ferrovias Centro Atlantico, a wide gauge (Brazilian 5 ft 3 in.) and meter gauge operator.
TUT is planning a tour in 2006 with Dr. John Kirchner of California as the guide. John has lead several of the other TUT Brazilian tours. It should be a great tour. Especially if you like narrow gauge steam. There are tours on several meter gauge steam operations. All are charter tours with restored steam. Since little of any steam still works full time in Brazil. One of the highlights will be the former Argentine meter gauge 2-10-2´s on the Theresa Cristina line.
