Mike,
I spent years reading books about rotary operations on the Colorado narrow gauges, but never saw it first hand. I mistakenly thought I had a pretty good idea about what it would be like. Then in '93 I was able to be in Chama for the triple header on the C&TS. Three things were suprising... 1) the terribly slow pace of advancement when throwing snow, 2) the sound somewhat like a jet engine, 3) the violent shaking of the cabin, as if the whole thing was about to fall to pieces. I wonder why the guys inside were not carried off in straight jackets by the end of the day, especilly if there was abundant coffee and cigarettes.
